Choosing a Desk for Your Home Office – 5 Important Questions

Before you purchase that new desk for your home office, there are a few questions you should ask yourself. When you find the perfect desk, you’ll be glad you did.

  1. What kind of space do you need on your desk top? If you have a desktop computer with a 17” monitor, a small roll-top probably won’t do the trick. Think about the items you have that must be on top of your desk first, then factor in the amount of clear space you would like to have for writing, sorting, or other activities. Once you’ve determined how big you’d like your desktop to be, make sure you have the space for it. The desk won’t do you any good if you’ve forgotten to leave room for a chair.
  2. What will you be storing in your desk? If you have a lot of files, look for deep drawers that can be adapted to hanging file folders. If you prefer to keep all your writing utensils and other small supplies tucked away and out of sight, look for a desk with some small drawers and invest in some organizers for inside. Whatever you need to store, make sure you will have plenty of space to stow it away. Lack of storage leads to a cluttered desk and reduced productivity.
  3. How often are you using your desk? If you are using your desk on a daily basis as part of a home office, your needs will be much different than if you just need somewhere to pay the bills. Think carefully about how you will use your desk. If it’s mostly a computer desk, you’ll want to look for features like pre-cut holes to hide away cords. If your desk will just be used for addressing bills and writing the occasional letter, you may just want a small writing desk.
  4. How do you want your desk to look when you’re not using it? Maybe your desk is tucked away in an office in the basement and you don’t really care how it looks when you’re not working. If so, go for functionality. But, if you’re desk is in a high traffic area of your house or even in a guest room, you may want to be able to keep it looking neat. There are lots of great convertible armoires and roll top desks that make it easier to hide your work-time clutter.
  5. What style is the other furniture in the room? Even it if fits all your other requirements, that great traditional armoire won’t look right with your modern décor and the sleek metal desk won’t feel at home in your country bedroom. No matter how functional the piece seems, make sure that it will go with the other furniture and décor in the room. You want your desk to help you be productive with out taking away from your style.
