There are many things you can do in your home without hiring an electrician. Table and floor lamps are a terrific option. Torchiere lamps (floor lamps that have the main light face upward) offer a variance of light in rooms.

The key is to make sure that there is enough lighting on your main work areas. For instance, you will want to have a desk lamp on your homework or bill paying desk/table. A floor lamp behind your reading chair is a must. There are certain sconces (lights that mount on the wall) that can plug into outlets. In that case, you will want to ensure that the chain or cord is complementary to your room scheme.

However, look closely at the ceilings in your main rooms. It is possible that you will see a round plate in the center of the ceiling. This usually means that the home has been wired for lighting, but no lighting has been installed. Many builders do this to allow the homeowner to choose her own fixture. If this is the case, then you are able to easily install a fixture or ceiling fan in that room.

While you certainly may be a handy person, Theresa, I would recommend that you have an electrician install the wired-in fixtures unless you are very used to working with it. Electricity is powerful and dangerous. Since at that point, the home is pre-wired you are looking at a relatively brief service time per fixture.

Another cost savings if you do hire an electrician, is to really get to know your neighbors. Many times a professional electrician (or plumber, painter, HVAC techician, etc) will allow you to group jobs together and charge only one trip charge. It isn't advertised as such, but is something that many will negotiate with you. It saves them time and you money. :-)

I hope that helps Theresa. Please let us know if we can help further.

My house has virtually no light fixtures on the ceilings. How can I get the same lighting effect without having to hire an electrician?
