Zabitatz: Inspiration for YOUR home

Have you been replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact florescents like I have? What do you like about these new "earth friendly" bulbs? What don't you like? Is the old light bulb going away? Are the new ones completely earth friendly? What issues do we face during the transition? What improvements are on the horizon? I lie awake at night speculating. How about you?

That is a great point Chris. I am also anxious to hear how people are or are not embracing the CFL phenomenon. Our earth is the only one we have, and anything that will help us to improve I am all for! Energy Star (R) is a logo that people should look for when purchasing bulbs and/or lighting if they want to remain environmentally aware... or if they want to save a few bucks on their lighting. :-)

I look forward to hearing (or reading) the responses!

I think discussion about CFL vs incandescent bulbs brings up a bigger issue. People think they are doing something about Global Warming. The average home uses so little energy on lighting compared to what is used for transportation and heating. Just the power used to dry a load of clothes could light the average house for a week. We use a lot more energy to heat our home than we should. I read an article suggesting people turn their thermostats down. Years ago we bought a programable one and cut our heating bill by 35%. Until we start to look at what we personally use, the problem will only get worse. My earth friendly suggestion as far as lighting goes is to turn lights off when you aren't using them.

I replace all my old fashion light bulbs with the new CFLs every time one burns out. This way, I don't have to buy a bunch at once. I realize that lighting is not the biggest consumer of energy in my house, but every little bit helps. I read somewhere that if every household changed just one light bulb to a CFL, it would be the carbon emission saving equivalent to taking a million cars off the road. My point being that every little bit adds up if everyone gets on board. Thanks for bringing up the topic. I think it's an important one.

I agree. It is amazing how much difference just a few little changes can make. If we all make small and big changes, what a difference we could make! The CFL issue is just one way we can save energy.

My roommate and I had bought CFL lights for every light fixture in our house before we moved in. Before summer kicked in our power bill was cheap. We also use the energy saving feature on our dryer. I think these bulbs are awesome and they do last longer. A lot of people don't purchase them because of the price but I have been noticing that recently that have become cheaper. I saw individual CFL at Walmart for .92 the other day.

That is great Jessica! I think people truly underestimate the savings that comes from replacing the bulbs. They think it is just for "treehuggers". Well, as a fellow treehugger, I also enjoy saving money on top of saving the world! :-)
