Zabitatz: Inspiration for YOUR home

Is it realistic to think that I can paint my kitchen cabinets myself? They are wood (of course) with a layer of varnish that I suspect I will have to sand off. Is it just easier to leave it to a professional? Has anyone tried it?

Hi Cheryl,
Check out my blog. I just painted my kitchen cabinets and blogged about the process. You can definitely do it, but be prepared. It's a long hard job especially if your cabinets are dark like mine were. It's definitely worth the effort in the end though. I used a special primer so I only had to do a bit of sanding. It ended up taking about 4 coats of paint to cover the dark wood so it's a lot of work. I recommend recruiting some friends to help.

I have done it. Dismantle fronts. Sand lightly first, then use a primer like kilz, then paint with a durable, washable paint. Allow to dry then re-attach to cabinet fronts. Start off using a brush to get into corners, then a little roller.

How does everyone feel about darker wood cabinets? I currently have something in the lighter oak stain on birch cabinets, but the rest of my furniture throughout the home is dark, like Mahoghany and Cherry.

If you have a large kitchen, I think dark wood could be very classic. I have a very small space so painting my cabinets white really helped open up the room and make it feel less cramped. If you're going to go dark, I'd go with lighter countertops and lighter walls like in this picutre. Would love to know what you decide to do.
