Fall Planting - Any tips?

I'm hoping to take advantage of some of the great sales at the local nurseries this fall. I've seen trees and shrubs at 75% off and great prices on perennials too. The only thing I'm wondering is if you have to take and extra precautions to make sure the new plants survive the winter. How long before a frost should you get the new plants in the ground?
